The Three Doshas in Daily Life
Vata, Pitta, Kapha — three principles Ayurveda uses to explain why the same food heals one person and harms another.
Not personality types The doshas are often misread as personality quizzes. They are closer to **weather patterns inside the body** — always present, always shifting, dominant at different hours and seasons.
Vāta — air and space Movement. Nerve impulses, thought, elimination. When high: anxiety, dryness, insomnia, cracking joints.
Pitta — fire and water Transformation. Digestion, metabolism, ambition. When high: inflammation, irritability, acid reflux, rashes.
Kapha — earth and water Structure. Immunity, lubrication, patience. When high: heaviness, congestion, lethargy, weight gain.
The times of day they rule - **Kapha:** 6–10 am and 6–10 pm. Rising early, before kapha thickens, is why traditional practice begins at dawn. - **Pitta:** 10–2, morning and night. This is why the strongest meal belongs at noon and why insomnia often strikes near midnight. - **Vāta:** 2–6, morning and afternoon. Creative but scattered hours.
One rule that covers most cases **Eat and sleep according to the sun.** Largest meal at midday, light supper before sunset, in bed by ten. This single alignment resolves more chronic complaint than any supplement.
