The Breath Is the First Teacher
Before mantras, before postures, before philosophy — there is the breath. It is the only autonomic system you can consciously touch.
A hinge between worlds The breath is unusual. It happens on its own — you do not have to remember to breathe while you sleep — but you can also take it over at any moment. This makes it a hinge between the voluntary and involuntary nervous systems.
What slow breathing actually does When you extend the exhale beyond the inhale, the vagus nerve signals the heart to slow. Heart rate variability rises. The prefrontal cortex — the seat of decision — receives more blood. This is not mysticism. It is measurable within ninety seconds.
A practice: 4-6 breathing - Inhale gently through the nose for a count of **4**. - Exhale slowly through the nose for a count of **6**. - Do this for five minutes, twice a day. - No forcing. If the count feels tight, shorten both numbers proportionally.
When to use it - Before a difficult conversation. - On waking, before touching a screen. - In the ten minutes after eating, to aid digestion.
The body is not a burden the spirit carries. It is the instrument through which the spirit learns.
